The Star of Baphomet
The Star of Baphomet is said to have its origins in accusations of demonic worship, made against the medieval Knights Templar.
The Hebrew letters at each of the points of the pentagram read "לִ וְ יָ תָ ן" starting from the lowest point and reading counter-clockwise. Translated, these read as LVTHN - Leviathan, a sea creature from Judaic mythology. Leviathan has many other complex meanings, of which several apply to their use with respect to the Star of Baphomet.
Sinisterly, Leviathan is commonly associated with Satan, as shown by the Book of Leviathan. the fourth book of the Satanic Bible.
However, not with-standing the pre-eminence of the Leviathan in Judaic mythology; The Star of Baphomet only really came to prominence later in the Middle Ages, as one of the ealiest Alchemical symbols as used by Qabalists.
